The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s Premier wilderness areas, and is one of the largest parks in Africa, covering 19485 square km of area.
It was one of the first National Parks to be proclaimed in South Africa, originally called the Sabi Game reserve after the Sabi River. The name “Sabi” literally means fear in the local Shangaan language, and the river was probably named this after the abundant numbers of hippo and crocodile that occur in its waters.
Kruger National Park is home to most of Africa’s famed animal species, such as lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, crocodiles, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, as well as more than 500 species of birds.
